And so here we go again with Disney's Post-Renaissance era. That weird period where they eschewed the musicals in favour of doing some more experimental works, with the results being polarising at best. And yet, with the passage of time, some entrants of this period are looked favourably, with some praising them for both the quality and Disney's willingness to take risks.

I do recall when Treasure Planet was originally released, being greeted with both bewilderment and a weak showing at the box office. But in the years since, many people have come around to it. So what do I make of this?

Well, this is an adaptation of Treasure Island so the source material is unbeatable. As such a lot rides on what is done with it. 

And I have to say this movie is indeed inventive: the visuals are stunning, showing every cent of the large budget. The creativity is great and designs are staggering. And it's also pleasing to see a straight-up adventure movie coming from Disney - but given the source material that is expected. 

It is certainly an odd move to reskin Treasure Island in a sci-fi setting but, against the odds, it works. 

Also casting Emma Thompson as Amelia was a master-stroke as she sounds like she's having the time of her life.

Best Picture Oscar winner no.: 75 (2002)

Because of this year-long undertaking, I have found myself watching more musicals than previous years. So why not add one more to the pile?
Still, I didn't have to look far for this one as Kiera had on her DVD shelf. 

Last week, I mentioned how the unlikely victory of Shakespeare in Love has changed the Oscar for Best Picture. But there is another reason: It announced Grade-A scumbag Harvey Weinstein as the figurehead for a new era. So from here on, expect to see a lot more Miramax films. 

But ultimately this was a lot of fun. It's big, colourful, inventive and the songs are great. And it proves what can accomplished as a screen musical. 
It could be argued that this movie wouldn't exist without the success of Moulin Rouge. But I say bugger Moulin Rouge - give me this any day. 

Lilo and Stitch

And this week's Friday night movie has been... Lilo and Stitch!

I have to wonder where this movie fits in with the Disney canon. It's generally accepted that everything after Lion King is something of a hit or miss affair and it would take Disney some time (Tangled perhaps?) before it remembered how to make a runaway hit again. Still certain movies from this period have their fans and will stick up for them. So where does Lilo and Stitch fit in?
I'm not sure myself so best find my own perspective on this.

On paper this movie sounds awful: A celebration of Hawaiian culture that incorporates the music of Elvis and space aliens. Such a strange combination shouldn't work but somehow it does. Of course such elements are the window dressing: the real heart of this movie is the familial bond between Lilo and Nani and how the presence of Stitch effects this. And I will admit: the movies succeeds at this. I can't be the only one who sees said bond and compare it to that of my siblings.
Also, I appreciate that this movie seems to be aimed at slightly older audience: I don't get the impression it is once talking down or relying on 'cutesy' gimmicks to bring in the younger crowd. And Stitch is far from the atypical 'cute' animal sidekick - and is therefore all the better for it.
So in the end, despite an odd setup there is a lot going for this movie and I enjoyed it a lot. And yes consider me a freshly-converted fan of this movie

Russian Ark

And this week's Friday night movie has been... Russian Ark!

Once upon a time, i started this movie but, for whatever reason, I never got around to finishing it. Well, today's the day I rectify such a situation.
When this came out, much was made of the technical prowess of this film: It's one mammoth, 90 minute single shot movie. No edits and no interruptions. Well, given the passage of time and nearly two decades of advancement in film-making, has time worn done Russian Ark?

Apparently not. The technical nature of the film is nothing less than astonishing. Get past the nature of a single unedited shot and we see incredible sets, a cast of thousands, some magnificent recreations of Czarist Russia and a unbeatable homage to history. Indeed, I have seen many beautiful looking movies in this lifetime and Russian Ark could sit comfortably in the upper regions of such a list
Sure it may have been a challenge to get through at times but in the end the challenge was well and truly worth it.

Road to Perdition

And this week's Friday night movie has been.....Road to Perdition!

I don't recall this movie being that big a deal when it was originally released - and compared to other graphic novel / comic book movies, it comes across, at least to me, to be overlooked. Sure these movies can't all be on par with the MCU but considering the patchy reputation these type of movies have, they can't all be bad right?

Well, i didn't see Road to Perdition as a comic book movie or an American rehash of the Japanese manga Lone Wolf and Cub. No, I saw it as a crime drama. And to that end, the movie is remarkably effective. Exceptional visuals, directing and soundtrack make for a gripping film and there's some truly unforgettable moments - the diner scene and ambush in the pouring rain being two such examples.

I reiterate: comic book movies tend to have a patchy reputation but this is undoubtedly one of the best. But there's something to consider: Did Road to Perdition become the turning point where people started taking comic book movies seriously again that it ultimately paved the way for the MCU? One can only wonder....

Blade 2

Well if you're going to see the first one then you may as well watch the second. 

I'm not going to say something like 'not as good as the first' so what I will say is that this was pretty damn good on it's own merits. And hey, you can't go wrong with Guillermo del Toro. And Ron Perlman. And The Cat from Red Dwarf
